The Power of… reflection: why looking back helps us choose how we move forward

As 2025 draws to a close, I’ve found myself thinking less about what I’ve done this year – and far more about what this year has taught me.

Not in a highlight-reel sense. Not in a “tick-the-boxes” way. But in a quieter, more honest way.

Reflection, for me, has never been about judgement. It’s about curiosity, insights and meaning.

And if there’s one thing that almost everything in 2025 has confirmed to me, over and over again, it’s this:

A more successful career, a fulfilled and integrated life, and a meaningful legacy don’t come from what you know, what you’ve achieved, or who you know – they come from:

how well you know yourself

how you choose to approach life, and

how you treat others.

That philosophy has shaped my life for decades. And in 2025, it became more than a belief – it has become the very foundation on which I’ve based my new venture.

A year of firsts, lasts, losses and lessons

This year marked my first full year running my own practice – stepping fully into what I sometimes call Tracey 2.0.

It certainly hasn’t been easy. Not just from this major career change, but also from a personal perspective.

Life has thrown a lot at me and my family this year. There have been moments of deep sadness, uncertainty, exhaustion and worry. There have also been moments of joy, pride, laughter, connection and quiet gratitude.

At the same time, the world around us has felt heavy – marked by conflict, loss and events that remind us how fragile and precious life really is.

And yet… this year has also been incredibly rewarding.

∞ I’ve met people I would never have met had I stayed on the path I was once on.

∞ I’ve had conversations that have changed me.

∞ I’ve been stretched, challenged and deeply affirmed.

And perhaps most poignantly – I’ve realised how perfectly timed some decisions were.

Had I still been working at EY and doing the hours I once worked, I simply wouldn’t have had the capacity to show up for my family and friends in the way this year demanded. I wouldn’t have had the space to sit beside and support people I love. I wouldn’t have been available for the moments that mattered most.

Life has a funny way of revealing that sometimes, what looks like an ending is actually protection and the start of something magical.

The Power of… newsletters in 2025

This year, I wrote a series of newsletters under the banner The Power of… – each one exploring a simple, human truth that I believe makes an outsized difference in career, life and legacy. And I have loved writing these newsletters and sharing my thoughts and wisdom.

Here’s a snapshot of what we explored together – “The Power of…”:

∞ A different way forward

∞ Connection

∞ Compassionate Empathy

∞ Curiosity

∞ Generosity

∞ Adaptability

∞ Storytelling

∞ Nurturing Relationships

∞ Legacy

∞ You

∞ Choice

∞ Community

∞ A Smile

∞ A Village

∞ Contribution

Each one stood alone. But together, they tell a much bigger story.

What others thought

One of the most rewarding – and deeply humbling – parts of this year has been how people have responded to the messages I’ve been putting out into the world. Through my newsletters, LinkedIn posts, keynotes, workshops, programs and one-on-one mentoring, people have taken the time to reach out and tell me what these ideas have stirred in them.

Sometimes it’s been a simple note to say, “That made me stop and think.”

Sometimes it’s been someone sharing that a message gave them the courage to try something new, to back themselves, or to finally name what hadn’t been working.

Other times, it’s been someone saying they felt seen – or reminded of who they are – at a moment when life felt particularly heavy.

Or maybe it was just a quote or a metaphor that I shared that helped something “make sense”.

And I never take that lightly.

I love hearing how conversations about career, life and legacy – about self-awareness, connection, choice and contribution – can create space for people to pause, reflect and reframe. To realise how capable they already are. To keep going, even when things feel hard.

In my book, I don’t need to have an impact on everyone I meet. If something I share helps just one person see themselves differently, show up more authentically, back themselves more fully, or feel a little less alone – that’s enough for me.

That’s the kind of contribution that matters to me. Quiet. Personal. Human. And often invisible – but deeply felt.

And when I look back across this year – across the conversations, the reflections, the stories shared – a number of clear themes keep emerging.

Ten themes for 2025 (most of them are old, a couple are new)

  1. It starts and ends with you: Self-awareness isn’t selfish – it’s foundational. And “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
  2. Life isn’t about balance it’s about integration. Your career isn’t separate from your life. It’s part of it.
  3. Connection is not a soft skill it’s a human skill. In leadership, in life, and in legacy. You could be one conversation away from an opportunity that changes… everything!!!
  4. Curiosity changes everything. About others. About situations. About yourself.
  5. Empathy with action builds trust. Compassionate empathy is how people feel seen, heard, valued and that they belong.
  6. Generosity creates momentum. Giving without expectation shapes culture and opportunity.
  7. Adaptability is a meta-skill. And critical in an AI world. Holding values tightly and plans lightly. Learn to “Be like water”!
  8. Legacy is built now, not later. In everyday choices, not end-of-life speeches. It’s about living your life the way you want to go out.
  9. Contribution matters more than impact. You can control how you show up and the effort you put in – not how others receive it nor the outcome.
  10. Choice will always matter more than chance. You don’t control what happens – you can only control how you respond. And you need to make sure you are in the driver’s seat of your life.

Friendships, seasons, and the quiet strength of community

This year also reminded me that relationships move in seasons.

∞ Some friendships deepened.

∞ Some new ones began unexpectedly.

∞ Some older ones drifted – gently, without blame but some with sadness.

∞ And some lifelong friendships quietly reminded me that time and distance don’t diminish real connection.

I’ve been there for others this year – and some very special people have been there for me. Including people I never would have predicted at the start of the year.

That, too, is the power of reflection: noticing who stands beside you when life gets heavy – and letting yourself receive their support.

As we head into the holidays…

This season invites us to slow down – even when the world feels loud, busy and rushed.

Before the next year rushes in, I encourage you to pause and reflect – not on what you achieved, but on what really mattered.

∞ How did you show up this year?

∞ What choices did you make when things were hard?

∞ Who were you present for?

∞ Where did you grow – even when it hurt?

∞ What did you contribute to others, and to yourself?

Because life will always deliver both joy and challenge – which we cannot control. But we will always have the power to choose how we respond.

And when we choose with intention – grounded in self-awareness, curiosity, accountability, connection, compassion and contribution – we build a life that feels meaningful, even when it’s messy.

Closing thought

Reflection isn’t about living in the past. It’s about learning from it – so you can live forward with clarity.

As we step into a new year, my wishes for you are simple:

∞ May you remember what and who really matters.

∞ May you stay connected – to yourself and to others.

∞ May you choose courage over comfort.

∞ And may you continue to contribute in ways that quietly make the world better – even if no one ever applauds it.

Because that’s where fulfilment lives. And that’s how legacy is built and lived.

Thank you for being part of this journey with me in 2025. I’m deeply grateful – and excited for what lies ahead in 2026 and beyond.

Here’s cheers to everyone!
