I was recently catching up with a former colleague โ€“ a senior partner in a professional services firm. We talked about life, careers, and what makes people (especially employees) happy.

She shared a story:
The team had been working some long hours due to a tight client deadline. Over lunch, a younger team member commented,
It made me stop and wonder โ€“ is that really it? Discounted coffee?

Now, donโ€™t get me wrong. Cheaper coffees and maybe gym memberships are ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐˜€ (especially with coffee prices these days!) and many total compensation packages can, should and do, include these. But perks like these rarely get to the

The challenge I see, based on 1000โ€™s of conversations Iโ€™ve had across my career and life, is that many people ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ปโ€™๐˜ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐—ธ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜. When asked, they give answers โ€“ but often not the ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ญ answers. Not the deeper truth about what would actually make them feel fulfilled, valued, or aligned.

Thatโ€™s why we need to empower people โ€“ employees, colleagues, even our kids and friends โ€“ to pause and ask:
โˆž Who am I?
โˆž What do I want (or in the words of the Spice Girls, what do I really, really want)?
โˆž What makes me feel fulfilled, not just temporarily happy?

Until we do this deeper work, people will keep asking for โ€œthingsโ€ โ€“ discounts, perks, quick fixes โ€“ and still wonder why they donโ€™t feel fulfilled, why this is not solving the problem.

How clear are ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ about what you want? And what about those around you?

(And if coffee really is your thing โ€“ tell me: what flavour and discount would sweeten the deal on those long hours?
